Bratislava's communist legacy

While most of the visitors focus on the charming old town or the impressive castle towering above the city, Bratislava's architecture is more diverse and actually offers some interesting creations from the 20th century.
When the country was ruled by the communist party, parts of historic Bratislava were demolished and replaced by new, modern constructions.
We have put together the most interesting ones.

Slovak Radio Building

The "inverted pyramid" is the seat of Slovak Radio since 1983. One of the first steel buildings in Slovakia is also the holder of the title "Building of the century".

Slavín - Monument to Soviet soldiers

Actually a military cemetery of Soviet Army soldiers, who fell while taking over the city from the German Wehrmacht in 1945. Finished in 1960, an example of Stalinist architecture.

The SNP Bridge

SNP stands for Slovak National Uprising. The bridge, finished in 1972, connects Petržalka (see below) to the Old Town. A restaurant and an observation deck are located on its top.

Slovak National Gallery

The brutally massive facade was built in 1977.  After abandoning ideas to tear it down, it was reconstructed in 2022. It houses mostly contemporary art.

Kamzík TV tower

Overlooking the city, the tower provides TV and radio signal to Bratislava and its surroundings. The shape of a wine bottle should refer to the  adjacent wine region.

Petržalka housing estate

Being home to approx. 114.000 people, Petržalka is the largest borough of Bratislava. The area witnessed massive development since 1960s and is a symbol of communist city planning.
